About the Role: We are looking for a Corrosion/Metallurgical Engineer to join our Metals Platform team. In this role, you will evaluate the corrosion behavior of various materials, components, processes and implantable medical devices to ensure long term durability; and provide metallurgy support to New Product Development (NPD) and Technology teams in the development and implementation of materials and processes for medical device applications.

This position offers the option to work on-site at our Woody Springs facility in Flagstaff, Arizona, with flexible work from home options available. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, meaning you could work remote part of the time, depending upon the responsibilities of the role and business needs*

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate the corrosion resistance of medical devices and components utilizing standard test methodologies, as well as coordinate the development of unique test methods
  • Recommend, execute and communicate appropriate test plans to demonstrate acceptable corrosion resistance of long-term medical implant devices
  • Define and communicate scope of work and experimental intent, conclude on scientific work and share learnings with other groups in verbal and written formats
  • Participate in external standards organizations such as American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
  • Work with New Product Development teams, other multi-disciplined engineers, product specialists, quality assurance, manufacturing associates, as well as divisional leadership and regulatory agencies in the development of new products for medical applications
  • Design, execute, and analyze experiments based on statistical techniques
  • Develop and recommend new and state-of-the-art materials and processes for medical device applications
  • Identify critical uncertainties and the overall approach to address each uncertainty
  • Perform and write validations of processes and equipment in accordance with FDA, International Standards Organization, and Gore Quality System guidelines
  • Work with external suppliers of raw materials, components, processes, and testing
    Required Qualifications:
    • Advanced degree in Materials Science and Engineering (or related science) OR a Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering (or a related science) with a minimum of 3 years of industry work experience
    • Hands-on experience in conducting corrosion testing in accordance with ASTM standards such as ASTM F2129 and ASTM F3044
    • Network and interact effectively with a broad range of associates spanning varied disciplines and responsibilities, including both internally and externally
    • Working knowledge and experience with corrosion testing including potentiodynamic polarization testing
    • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of statistics
    • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills with the ability to clearly communicate ideas, concepts, and conclusions to both highly technical and non-technical associates
    • Ability to have a work style of hands-on involvement with all phases of projects with the ability to work effectively in team situations as well as independently
    • Demonstrated ability in the development and execution of experiments, testing, data analysis and documentation of results
    • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, initiate, and drive projects to completion
    • Ability to understand electrochemical and corrosion principles
    • Ability to travel up to 10%
      Desired Qualifications:
      • Experience in the medical device industry, with familiarity of quality control systems, design control, validations, and regulatory requirements
      • Experience evaluating degradation behavior of resorbable metals
      • Working knowledge and experience with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)
