The Supervisory Registered Respiratory Therapist displays proficiency and performs at a level of excellence in the field of Respiratory Therapy and diagnostic testing. Responsible for caring for and assisting patients using all aspects of respiratory therapy towards patients we serve and provides care under the Acute Care Service Line, and work with other departmental staff to achieve our goal of providing excellent patient care.IMPORTANT: A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

  • Northern Arizona Veterans Administration Health Services (NAVAHCS) respiratory services are performed in accordance with the guidelines established by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC), American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), and policies and procedures of NAVAHCS. The protocol and procedures are established for the evaluation, treatment, management, and care of patients with chronic deficiencies and abnormalities associated with the pulmonary system.
  • Coordinates, facilitates, and supervises the unit processes by working collaboratively with employees to ensure tasks are completed, good working relationships among employees and with management are maintained, and service line priorities and goals, needs and achievements are coordinated with management.
  • Supervises a staff consisting of a mix of registered respiratory therapists and certified respiratory therapists providing services to include Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs), facilitating pulmonary video clinics, and coordinating home oxygen and PAP therapies in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Assesses the impact of the work both within and outside the Respiratory Therapy Department.
  • Makes day-to-day adjustments in work assignments.
  • Communicates to department employees the problems to be solved or program issues under review, and coaches the employees in identifying the parameters of a viable solution. Ensures the organization's"vision" is integrated into the departmental goals, strategies and activities. Ensures employees participate in both short-term and long-term planning stages of projects.
  • Monitors the status and progress of work and adjusts in accordance with established priorities.
  • Prepares the annual budget and recommends and justifies to higher authority changes with significant budgetary impact. In addition, develops and reports to higher level supervisor's changes in budget requirements based on anticipated workload and productivity capability of the section.

    Basic Requirements:


    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Registered Respiratory Therapist: Has a certificate as an RRT from the NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care) and a registry number, or a certificate from another body which the NBRC recognizes as its credentialing equivalent. This includes registration based on either:


      • Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination administered by the NBRC since 1983, or
      • Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination for a registered inhalation or respiratory therapist administered by the (1) National Board for Respiratory Therapy from July 1974 through 1982 or (2) American Registry of Inhalation Therapists from 1961 through June 1974.


        • English Language Proficiency: RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).


          Grade Determination GS-09: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, candidates must have had at least 1 additional year of successful and progressively responsible experience related to respiratory therapy at the GS-8 level or equivalent. This experience must have included demonstrated accomplishments in upgrading services to patients. The candidate must have demonstrated expert knowledge of respiratory therapy methods, equipment, and procedures and the ability to assume responsibility to plan, organize, direct, coordinate, and evaluate programs involving respiratory care.

          The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-09.

          Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.
