Job Description This position is responsible for creating a safe, participant-centered environment reflecting current trends and industry standards for an aquatic environment at Douglas J. Wall Aquatic Center. Primary functions and responsibilities for this position include programming, student events and activities, coached programs and management of the Learn to Swim program. This position will supervise student staff and will require data-driven decision-making to assist in budget monitoring, marketing, strategic planning, building/equipment maintenance, revenue generation and policy development. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES Responsible for all aspects of the Learn to Swim program (group, private/semi-private and adult swim lessons), including: scheduling trained staff, staff training, maintaining/creating new documentation/support materials as needed, and evaluating instructors. Assist in the recruitment, supervision and evaluation of qualified lifeguards, WSI's, masters coaches and cashiers. Foster a safe working and learning environment for student staff through comprehensive training, coaching techniques, constructive communication and timely evaluation (emphases: accountability, customer satisfaction and safety) while serving internal and external guests. Assist and serve as back up for operational management at Wall Aquatic Center. Oversee recreational swim times, programming and special events (including associated equipment setup and takedown). Assist in marketing and promotion of aquatic activities within Campus Recreation, including social media networks and website page maintenance. Communicate weekly updates to staff. Assist through providing Pool Operator coverage to ensure proper facility disinfection each week. Assist with facility scheduling, including working with the event reservations team for pool rentals. Collaborate with departmental team to initiate, execute and evaluate signature events and creative programming, including: implementation, execution, supervision and evaluation of programs and events hosted in the aquatic facility. Participate as a representative of Campus Recreation at university programs and events such as Family Weekend, Homecoming, Orientation, Expos and New Employee Orientations. Support national recreation trends identified by department, with the intent of remaining a leader among peer institutions. Assist in development and maintenance of a risk management plan at the Aquatic Center. Providing accurate and timely communications to Aquatic Coordinator and Assistant Director. Assist with all aspects of the WAC Front Desk operations, including cash handling, EMSA Financials policy compliance, making change runs, etc. Process payroll for all WAC student employees in accordance with university and departmental deadlines. Perform related duties as required. The position may require working mornings, evenings and weekends. NAU is currently engaged in an Organizational Growth and Effectiveness Initiative, which focuses on positioning the University for future success of its operational practices. As a result, some aspects of this position may be subject to change, such as, but not limited to: duties, titles, reporting structure, etc. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Park & Recreation Management, Health Education/Promotion or field related to Aquatic programming AND two years of administrative/coordinative program experience; OR Six years of progressively responsible administrative coordinative aquatic program experience; OR Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education. Preferred Qualifications Certification in CPO and/or AFO. Additional work experience beyond the minimum qualifications in the field of Aquatics. Experience supervising, training and evaluating staff. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, WSI, CPR for the professional Rescuer and LGI certification. American Red Cross LGIT, WSIT, CPR-Instructor. Knowledge Skills and Abilities Familiarity with Microsoft Office, website development and Social Media. Ability to work independently and effectively communicate. The ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds. Background Information This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school's policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year's Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing. The report may be viewed at nau.edu/clery or by visiting the NAUPD website . A printed copy of the report is available upon request by contacting the NAU Police Department, Records Department at (928)523-8884 or by visiting the department at Building 98A on the NAU Mountain Campus. Salary The budgeted salary amount is $35,557 - $37,000. This position's pay grade is 43. The salary range for this paygrade can be found on the CLS Grade Schedule . The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information. FLSA Status This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked. Benefits This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
