GS-11 Salary: $62,236 (Step 01) to $80,912 (Step 10); GS-12 Salary: $74,596 (Step 01) to $96,978 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities *As a Geographer within the Astrogeology Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: * - Plan and conduct and geographic studies and analyses using GIS, computer mapping, data visualization, and geospatial technology and methods to produce ready-to-use data and map products for scientific visualization and analysis in support of planetary mapping and future robotic and manned missions to planetary bodies. - Design, develop, and support the maintenance, refinement, and upgrading of existing cartographic and geographic methods by designing, coding, testing, and debugging application software. - Develop and support the maintenance and upgrade of existing photogrammetric and remote sensing methods by designing, coding, testing, and debugging application software. - Prepare technical specifications for software development or product archives and participates in evaluation activities. - Present at relevant meetings, workshops, and conferences to enhance knowledge of the state-of-the-art and facilitate planning, coordinating, and/or advising work efforts with members of the scientific community. - Operate a government vehicle as an incidental driver. The GS-11 level position is identical to the GS-12 level position, except that the incumbent will be under closer supervisory controls in the form of oral and written instructions and review of completed work. Examples of such experience may include: 1) application of computer programs to streamline the automation of remotes sensing or geospatial data to catalog, visualize, or derive useful scientific products; 2) utilize knowledge of geographic theories, principles, techniques, and practices in the design and analysis of geospatial databases; 3) providing assistance to a higher-graded researcher on small, self-contained research studies. Examples 1 & 2 included independent responsibility for small projects or significant segments of larger projects. Discrepancies may have arisen in source materials. Judgment was used to resolve the less difficult problems; a higher-level authority resolved the most difficult problems. Work was carried out in accordance with established procedures and criteria. For example 3, extensive and precise instructions were provided and the project leader was readily available for consultation and guidance. - GS-12: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level, that is in or related to the duties described above. Examples of such experience may include: 1) develop and apply computer application programs to streamline the automation of remotes sensing or geospatial data to catalog, visualize, or derive useful scientific products; 2) utilize knowledge of geographic theories, principles, techniques, and practices in the design and analysis of geospatial databases; 3) perform analytic and interpretive work using photogrammetric or remoting sensing techniques in isolation or in collaboration with peers . Examples 1 & 2 required a high degree of independence in planning and carrying out the assignments, selecting the approach or methodology to be used, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, and coordinating the work with others as necessary. The work usually involved established methods and conventional techniques and involved assisting in or partial responsibility for changing and modifying established procedures and precedents. Example 3 required independence in the execution of the research process, except for conferring with the supervisor at intermediate stages to assure that the approaches taken were effective and sound. - You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement. Education - Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
